Greek Philosophy & Myth

On Tuesday 22nd, Sept. we looked at the ways in which the Greeks tried to understand the world around them. First, we looked at the philosophers such as Socrates and Plato. Then we discussed the power of myth and how it is used to also try and understand the world. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your assignment from last time, Chapter 4 Section 3 - Classical Greece.

2) Download the following notes and read pages 128 -130 of your text on Greek Philosophy.

3) Then download the following myths and worksheet. Read at least 4 of the myths and then choosing one of those myths, use it to complete the worksheet and the little art extension that is part two of your worksheet.

The Greek City State & Classical Greece

On Friday 18th, Sept. we corrected the assignment from last time. There were notes given on the formation of the two most powerful city-states in Greece: Athens and Sparta. We then did some reading about classical Greece and the war with Persia. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your assignment from last time, Chap 4 Section 1: Early Civilization in Greece.

2) Please read Chapter 4 Sections 2 of your text and fill in the notes sheet.

Intro to Ancient Greece

On Tuesday 15th, Sept. we began studying ancient Greece. We started by viewing a video on the possibility that some of the myths we know may have been based in actual events, places, and people. We watched the video, took notes, and discussed what we learned. We then took some time to complete a book assignment about the impact of physical geography and the early civilizations of Greece.

If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed. Watch the video by clicking the link below and then taking 25 significant notes on what you learned or writing a 1 page summary of what you learned. IMPORTANT: You only need to watch the following minutes 1:00-13:00 and 20:00 - 32:00. Then you need to complete the following worksheet by reading pages 106-111 of your text book and answering the questions on the worksheet. IMPORTANT: You will need your online book to complete.

Timeline Correction & Chap 1 and 2 Quiz

On Friday 11th, Sept. we corrected and analyzed our timeline that we created last time. We then spent a little time doing a quick review and then took our quiz. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your date sheet (we corrected this last time) and timeline (we made these last time).

2) Turn in your three green notes sheets and yellow study guide from alst time. Remember that the yellow study guide was not an assignment, but we will include it with your  notes in case you need it again!

3) Be sure to review your study guide that you got last time and then schedule a time to make up your quiz ASAP, preferably after school.

Making a Timeline of the Ancient Middle East (Continued)

On Wednesday 9th, Sept. we continued working on our timeline. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to nake up what you missed:

1) Using the worksheet from last time, go on to complete Steps 2 and 3. You should have already completed Step 1 and collected the dates  In order to move on to step 2 you will need two blank pieces of unlined paper. Then do the following:

- draw a line down the middle of each paper and on the line evenly space 15 hashmarks (you should have a total of 30 hashmarks when you have done both pieces of paper.)
- Each hashmark represents 100 years. On the first hashmark (the one on the far left) label it 3100 BCE, then label each hashmark counting down by 100. You should end with 200 BCE as your last hashmark.
- Then follow the instructions on the back of the worksheet for Steps 2 & 3.

2) Download and study the following review. It is NOT an assignment, but simply meant to help you get ready.

New Civilizations and Empires

On Friday 4th, Sept. we discussed the rise of new civilizations and empires. Our main point of the day is that civilizations advances through two primary ways: innovation and cultural diffusion. Innovation simply means the creation of something new from within the culture. Cultural diffusion refers to the process by which technology and ideas spread from one culture to another and are new ideas that come from outside of the culture.

If you were absent, you will need to print out the notes. For the notes you will need to use your textbook to complete the assignment. Please Read Chapter 2 Sections 3 & 4. Please use your online textbook.

Ancient Egyptian Civilization

On Wednesday 2nd, Sept. we continued our exploration of ancient Egypt and recapped what we learned about the ancient Sumerians from last time. We also watched a video on the great discoveries of ancient Egypt; however, these discoveries are not the typical pyramids and mummies. From these discoveries we have learned quite a lot about the Egyptians. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Watch the following video and prepare a 3/4 page summary about what you learned about ancient Egyptian culture. What did they do? How did they live? What did they believe? What do these two discoveries (i.e., the Khufu boat and the use of fire at the quarry) tell us about Egyptian life at that time?

You only need to watch the first 20 minutes!!!

2) Please finish the assignment we began last time on Egyptian civilization. You will need to use your online book to do so. Remember, it is found at www.glencoe.com/ose/ and then put the code I gave you into the student login.
