The Rise of Islam

On Wed. 30th, Nov. and Thurs. 1st, Dec. we began our unit on Islamic civilization. We first watched a video on the life of Muhammad and the beginning of Islam we then took notes on the basic beliefs and structure of Islam. Afterwords we worked on an assignment about the rise of an Islamic Empire with a focus on the development of the Umayyad Dynasty and the split between Shia and Sunni in Islam.

If you were absent, you will need to do the following:
1) Download the notes and copy from a friend.
2) Download the assignment and use the textbook to complete.
3) Complete a 1 pg report on the man Muhammad (who he was, what he did, how he influenced Islam, etc.)

Current Event: November

On Mon. 28th, Nov. and Tues. 29th, Nov. we conducted our current event discussion for the month of November. If you were absent you will need to turn in your three blue Current Event Sheets on your return. You will also need to down load the following article and write a 1/2 page response to it. Be sure to explain what you think of the story, how it made you feel and why it is an important story to consider.

Test: Ancient Rome

On Tues. 22nd, Nov and Wed. 23rd, Nov. we took our test on our unit called Ancient Rome. We then corrected it.

If you were absent, you have two weeks to make this test up and turn in your review crossword and unit notes. If you would like to redo your test because of a low grade, you also have two weeks.

Review: Ancient Rome

On Fri. 18th, Nov and Mon. 21st, Nov. we shared our Roman murals, corrected our homework on the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and then reviewed for our test on the Ancient Romans.

If you were absent, you will need to turn in your Roman mural and your reading homework. You will also need to download the study guide and the review crossword from below.

Rise of Christianity and the Fall of Rome

On Wed. 16th, Nov. and Thurs. 17th, Nov. we spent a little more time working on our murals from last time. We then discussed and took notes on the Rise of Christianity and Rome's part in helping Christianity become a major religion. We then had a reading assignment on the decline and fall of the empire.

If you were absent, your mural is due next time in full. You must also download the notes and assignment from below. The assignment can be completed using the book, but the notes you will need to copy from a friend in the class.

Creating a Mural

On Mon. 14th, Nov. and Tues. 15th, Nov. we discussed the first Roman emperors and then selected events from our Roman Empire unit to create murals about.

Cause and Effect: From Republic to Empire

On Thurs. 10th, Nov. and Fri. 11th, Nov. we discussed the critical thinking skill of identifying cause and effect. We divided into partners and completed a worksheet on Chapter 5 Sec 2. After that we wrote a small essay on the information we learned.

If you were absent, you will need to download the following worksheet and complete it, unfortunately you will have to complete the worksheet on your own. After the worksheet is complete, you need to write a one page essay that answers the following question:

How did Rome change from a republic into an empire?

The Punic Wars and 12 Tables

On Tues. 8th, Nov. and Wed. 9th Nov. we discussed the Punic Wars and Rome's struggle with Carthage and eventual defeat of Carthage. We also looked at the very first code of ancient Roman law called the Twelve Tables.

If you were absent, you will need to turn int he assignments from last time and then download the following notes and assignments. You will need to copy the notes from a friend in class and use the handout to complete the questions.

On Thurs. 3rd, Nov. and Mon. 7th, Nov. we discussed the rise of the Roman empire. We took notes on the early Roman republic and watch a video on the Romans. We also passed out a small homework assignment that is due next time.

Test: Ancient Greece

On Mon. 31st, Oct. we corrected our fact/opinion worksheet. We then spent the remainder of the class reviewing for our test next week on Tuesday (A Day) and Wednesday (B Day). We put together our notes packet which this time consisted of just three sheets.
