Imperialism in Africa and Test Review

On Tuesday 17th, Dec. and Wednesday 18th, Dec. I was again ill with the flu and was not here. However, I expect the class to carry on. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

African Society and Culture

On Friday 13th, Dec. and Monday 16th, Dec. we looked at the culture and society of the kingdoms of Africa. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read Chapter 7 Section 3 and complete the assignment.

Kingdoms of Africa

On Wednesday 11th, Dec. and Thursday 12th, Dec. we looked at the kingdoms of Africa from about 1000 AD to 1600 AD. We covered in particular the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, Songhai, and the Swahili Coast. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read the portion of Chap 7 Sec 1 that discusses Kush and Axum (pages 238-239) and fill in the notes to the best of your ability.

2) Please read Chapter 7 Section 2 of your text and complete the packet. Unfortunately you will need to complete the entire packet on your own. Although this was a group assignment, you will not have a chance to work in a group. I apologize.

Geography of Africa

On Monday 9th, Dec. and Tuesday 10th, Dec. we looked at the physical and political geography of early African kingdoms. We took notes on the geography and then created a basic map of the geography. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your movie notes from last time.

2) Read Chapter 7 Section 1 on the geography and climate of Africa. You can then fill in as much of the notesheet as possible. You can copy from a friend any of the notes you are unable to discover by reading the section.

3) Then on a large piece of blank white paper create your map of Africa by following the instructions. (If you do not have access to a large sheet of blank, unlined paper or construction paper, come see me for the paper!)

Africa: A History Denied

On Thursday 4th, Dec. and Friday 5th, Dec. we corrected our assignment last time on Ali Cogia. We then spent time discussing and looking at African history. We watched a video, taking notes to answer three questions. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your assignment from last time.

2) Watch the following videos and take notes that answer the following three questions. You should take enough notes total that would fill 1-1.5 pages.

- Why do we know so little of African history? (There are many factors.)
- What did white settlers say and think about Africans and their history? What were some theories that they developed to explain African history?
- Who discovered the truth about Great Zimbabwe, what were they like? How did they do it and how was the discovery received by others?

The Abbasid and Fatamid Dynasties

On Tuesday 26th, Nov. and Monday 2nd, December we looked at the Abbasid and Fatamid Dynasties. We took some notes and completed a small book assignment. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your work from last time.

2) Please do the small book assignment about Islamic Civilization (pages 200-203 of your text).
