Beginnings of the Renaissance

On Tuesday 28th, Jan. and Wednesday 29th, Jan. we took a small quiz on the Middle Ages and then began our look at the Renaissance with some notes and a chart. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Schedule a time to come in and make up the quiz.

2) Read Chapter 12 Sections 1 and 2 and fill in the notes to the best of your ability. For notes you can not find, you may copy from a friend.

3) Complete the following chart by locating and identifying each of the people listed. You will find these people by reading Chapter 12 Sections 1 and 2 of your text. Most are bolded and highlighted so they are easy to find. Be sure to read the WHOLE sections so you get all the information.

End of the Middle Ages and the Black Death

On Thursday 23rd, Jan. and Monday 27th, Jan. we looked more at the culture of the Middle Ages and how it came to an end with the Black Death and the Hundred Years War. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read Role of the Church (pages 304-306) of your text and Culture of the Middle Ages (pages 348-351) of your text and complete the following notes.

- What caused it?
- How did people respond to it?
- What were their explanations for it?
- How did it impact Europe and the population?

Medieval Christianity

On Tuesday 21st, Jan. and Wednesday 22nd, Jan. we discussed the influence of the Christian church on medieval Europe. We looked at the aspects of politics and culture in particular. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your assignment about the Revival of Trade and Growth of Cities in the Middle Ages.

2) Read Chapter 10 Section of your textbook and complete the notes sheet.

3) Watch the following video on Gothic cathedrals and  write a 1 page summary about:
- How building techniques changed?
- What innovations or things did medieval builders learn to do to create higher building?
- What the purpose of the cathedral was?

Book Report Presentations

On Wednesday 15th, Jan. and Thursday 16th. Jan we listened to the presentations for the book reports. If you were absent, this is one day you don't need to make up the presentation notes. However, you MUST turn in a hard copy and electronic copy of your book report on your return. Not doing so will result in receiving a 0 on your book report.

Peasants, Manors, & the Rise of Cities

On Friday 10th, Jan. and Monday 13th, Jan. we corrected our history booklets, took notes on peasants and their role in medieval society and then played a game about the importance of trade in building a city. This game will set us up for our next class topic. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read Chapter 10 Sec 1 of your text and complete the notes and assignment. If there are notes you can not find, you may copy from a friend.

2) Research and write a one page report on either the Hanseatic League OR medieval guilds. This report will make up in part for the experience of playing the trading game and will get you ready to discuss trade next time.

Choose one of the topics above and discuss what it is, why it was important to the cities of the Middle Ages, its structure or parts, and the impact it had on life during the Middle Ages. Your report should be 1 page typed, double spaced.

Byzantine Empire and the Crusades

On Wednesday 8th, Jan and Thursday 9th, Jan. we looked at the Byzantine empire briefly and the Crusades that were launched by European Christians against the Muslims. We discussed the impact of hatred and desire for power and how it often times creates problems for us. We also looked at modern manifestations of anti-Muslim feeling in the US today. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Watch the following clip and write a 1/2 page response expressing your thoughts about what you saw. You will write another 1/2 page response to how you feel this clip is connected to the assignment.

2) Read Chapter 9 Section 4 of your text and complete the following assignment:

3) After completing the assignment, write at least a paragraph response as to any possible connections you see between then and now. This will attempt to make up for the class discussion.

Transforming the Roman World and the Rise of European Kingdoms

On Monday 5th, Jan. and Tuesday 6th, Jan. we looked at Chapter 9 Secs. 1, 2 & 3. We took notes on Feudalism and then began making booklets about the rise of European Kingdoms. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read Chapter 9 Ses. 1 & 2 on Transforming the Roman World and Feudalism and then fill in the notes.
