Book Reports and Current Events

On Thurs. 27th, Oct. and Fri. 28th, Oct. we spent the vast majority of class listening to book report presentations. For the small bit of time that was left over we discussed current events as much as was possible.

IMPORTANT: Students are required to turn in a hard copy of their book report and also submit an electronic copy of their report. The electronic copy is to complete a plagiarism check. Students who do not submit an electronic copy of their book report will NOT receive credit!

Electronic submissions must be sent to: troy.ball@herrimanhigh.org

In addition to the book report, students turned in three current event sheets.

Thanks.

Distinguishing Fact from Opinion

On Mon. 24th, Oct. and Tue. 25th, Oct. we took notes on Greek expansion under Alexander the Great and discussed the legacy he left for the Hellenistic kingdoms that arose after his empire collapsed. We also spent time looking at some of the major advancements of his time and some people who furthered mathematics and philosophy.

After that we looked at an important critical thinking skill, distinguishing fact from opinion. Our classes came up with the general idea that facts are established truths such as 2+2=4 or Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. Whereas an opinion is a statement of evaluation, such as math is fun or the attack on Pearl Harbor was a foolish military decision.

If you were absent you will need to turn in any work from last time that you may still have. Also, you will need to download the notes and copy from a friend in the class. In addition you will ned to download the assignment and follow the instructions.

Thanks.

Greek Philosophy and Myth

On Tues. 18th, Oct and Wed. 19th, Oct. we took notes on Greek philosophy and then for periods 6 and 7 looked at Greek myths as well. We discussed how the ancient Greeks used reason and faith to understand and explain the world around them. We also looked at ways modern society does the same today.

The assignment on Greek myths unfortunately can not be uploaded to the internet, so if you were absent you will have to pick up the assignment from me on your return. However, if you were absent, you can still download the notes and copy from a friend. Also, any work you may have that was due, you must turn in.

Thanks.
