African Society and Culture

Kingdoms of Africa

On Wednesday 11th, Dec. and Thursday 12th, Dec. we looked at the kingdoms of Africa from about 1000 AD to 1600 AD. We covered in particular the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, Songhai, and the Swahili Coast. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Read the portion of Chap 7 Sec 1 that discusses Kush and Axum (pages 238-239) and fill in the notes to the best of your ability.

Geography of Africa

On Monday 9th, Dec. and Tuesday 10th, Dec. we looked at the physical and political geography of early African kingdoms. We took notes on the geography and then created a basic map of the geography. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your movie notes from last time.

2) Read Chapter 7 Section 1 on the geography and climate of Africa. You can then fill in as much of the notesheet as possible. You can copy from a friend any of the notes you are unable to discover by reading the section.

Africa: A History Denied

On Thursday 4th, Dec. and Friday 5th, Dec. we corrected our assignment last time on Ali Cogia. We then spent time discussing and looking at African history. We watched a video, taking notes to answer three questions. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

- Why do we know so little of African history? (There are many factors.)

The Abbasid and Fatamid Dynasties

Shang, Zhou, and Qin Dynasties

on Wednesday 13th, Nov. we wrapped our look at India and China with a discussion of the Shang, Zhou, and Qin dynasties. We also corrected our assignment from last time and then completed one last assignment. Next time we will review and take the quiz on the same day. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

3) On a large blank piece of paper (I have these, if you cannot get your own.) create a large Venn Diagram and label one circle Ancient India and the other Ancient China. In each of the three sections of your venn diagram list 10 items that make these civilizations different and the same. So in the section that is just India list 10 things that are unique or different about India that you have learned. Do the same for the section that is just China, but list those things for China of course. In the middle, overlapping section list 10 things that are the same about both civilizations. Remember, to consider religion, culture, philosophy, rules, events, achievements, beliefs, etc.

Early Chinese Dynasties

Introduction to Ancient India and China

On Wednesday 30th, Oct. and Thursday 31st, Oct. we began our look at the civilizations of ancient India and China. We had a class discussion, watched a small video clip and then completed a book assignment. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Check you Skyward and let me no IMMEDIATELY if there are any questions or concerns. The grade you see is your FINAL grade for first quarter.

2) On a piece of paper answer the following questions with details and honestly:

- What is happiness?
- How does one find happiness or receive more of it?

The Punic Wars and From Republic to Empire

Greek Myth and Philosophy

On Monday 23rd, Sept. and Tuesday 24th, Sept. we spent the time looking at the contributions of the ancient Greeks to our understanding of good and truth through their use of myth and philosophy. We also turned in the assignment from last time. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

Introduction to the Ancient Greeks

On Friday 13th, Sept. and Tuesday 17th, Sept. we began our next unit on Ancient Greece and Rome. We started by viewing a video on the possibility that some of the myths we know may have been based in actual events, places, and people. We watched the video, took notes, and discussed what we learned. We then took some time to complete a book assignment about the impact of physical geography and the early civilizations of Greece.

If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed. On Thursday 12th, Sept. and Friday 13th, Sept. we took our first test covering Chapters 1 & 2 about the rise of human civilization. If you were absent, you need to schedule a time before or after school to make up the test. You have a two week window in which to do so; however, it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you do it as soon as possible.

PLAN Test Prep, Timeline Correction, & Review for TEST

On Tuesday 10th, Sept. & Wednesday 11th, Sept. we spent the first part of class with the counselors preparing the non-academic portion of the PLAN test which you will take next week. 

We then spent time correcting our timelines. Then we took some time to evaluate those time lines by looking at cause and effect and change over time and discussing these things. We then spent just a few minutes reviewing for our quiz on Chaps. 1 & 2 for next time.

Students were informed that on test days they need to come with a reading book in case they finish early and to take care of any personal business before they come. There are no hall passes during a test, except for obvious and immediate emergencies.

If you were absent you will need to have your timeline ready to turn in when you return and have the evaluation worksheet completed. Also, you will need to turn in all of your green notes sheets for the unit next time before the test.

Ancient History Timeline

On Monday 8th, Sept. we spent some time gathering dates from the various topics we have thus covered. The purpose of which is to create an illustrated timeline of the ancient Middle East. Once our timeline is completed, we will be able to visually analyze the progress of civilization over time. We then completed parts 2 and 3 of the assignment. Read the instructions carefully, you may print out pictures to illustrate your timeline instead of drawing pictures if you would like.

New Civilizations and New Empires Arise

New Civilizations and Empires

On Wednesday 5th, Sept. and Thursday 6th Sept. we discussed the rise of new civilizations and empires. Our main point of the day is that civilizations advances through two primary ways: innovation and cultural diffusion. Innovation simply means the creation of something new from within the culture. Cultural diffusion refers to the process by which technology and ideas spread from one culture to another.

If you were absent, you will need to print out the notes and worksheet. The notes you will need to copy from a friend in the class and then use your textbook to complete the assignment. Because you do not have a textbook, you will need to come in before or after school or check a textbook out.

The Rise of Humans and Development of Civilizations

On Wed. 28th, Aug. & Thurs. 29th, Aug. we discussed the rise of humans and the development of civilizations. The information presented was presented as a theory that is generally accepted by anthropologists and archaeologists. We discussed the development of humans and how agriculture led to the beginnings of human civilization. Students took notes on this information and then we completed an assignment identifying the six characteristics of civilization and then compared those characteristics to modern American society.

This post is to just let everyone know how excited I am for another fabulous upcoming year! On Thursday 30th, May we completed an end of year evaluation and essay about what we learned over the course of the year. We shared these essays with the class. Napoleon and Essay Writing

On Monday 13th, May we corrected our Age of Napoleon worksheet from last time and then watched an in depth biography on Napoleon. We then discussed what kind of man he was and organized our assignment, notes, and discussion into a five paragraph essay. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn in your assignment, Age of Napoleon, from last time.

2) Download the notes sheet and use it to do some personal research on Napoleon. Even though we watched a video you can take notes by researching the internet. Follow the instructions and organizational outline on the back of the notes sheet to write a five paragraph essay.

On Thursday 9th, May we looked at the Reign of Terror and began discussing Napoleon and his impact after the Revolution. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

The French Revolution (Continued)

On Tuesday 7th, May we continued discussing and looking at the French Revolution. We graded our assignment from last time and then watched a  portion of a movie on the subject and then completed a writing assignment. If you were absent, you will need to do the following to make up what you missed:

1) Turn your assignment in from last time the Chapter 18 Section worksheet.

2) You can either come in after school to watch the video or you can do some research on your own about the French Revolution. You will need to use the information you got from your book Chap 18 Sec 1 and your research and/or movie to write a 1 page essay that answers the following questions:

- What were conditions like in France during the late 1700s?
- What kind of rulers were Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette?
- How did the people of France respond to this social, political, and economic conditions?
